I guess here's a question. Is a hologram that is being programmed and put into action by a human being a human itself, or no? The intent is there, but the body is fake, but the thoughts the hologram has are human thoughts, right? But I think you would have some people who would say "the hologram is not human" regardless. So in the end...I think being human is...all the parts belonging to a whole. If you leave something out, then that definition can't exactly be applied as easily.
[He seeks out 45. The rest he'll wait to talk to, or talk to later, because, well, let them have their moment. When he sees 45, he just smirks, eyes glinting with faint amusement.]
Haha. That was quite a speech from all of them. Rather funny how some of those went.
Shakespeare said we were all actors on a stage, huh? Like you say, if I don't do anything, is it because that's part of the script? Or am I outside of it, and choose not to?
That, or they approached Dimitri in a friendly way, but something about how they acted may have made Dimitri wary. And he was probably right to feel that way.
...Or someone was just nervous that it wouldn't work out, whatever the plan was.
Oh, trust me, I wasn't expecting them to deliver it like that either. Half of them really don't care, after all. They think they're the biggest victims in this, like being forced to murder with no one ever possibly being able to understand is so difficult on them.
[ which... which is worse, genuinely being apologetic and piling on the sob stories to look for forgiveness, or not caring but carrying on with the tough guy 'i'll accept whatever judgment you render except not really' posturing anyway? ]
Can you believe they thought I wouldn't be willing to work with them even if it was for the sake of bringing the others back?
[ she has been accused of many things, but that's a new one. ]
I think many people might feel at least a little apprehensive about getting caught, considering the consequences, but that's hardly identifying, nor does it tell us much of anything.
If we apply that in reverse, then does that mean we are lacking something if we're not human?
[ she studies the flowers idly. ]
I'm not sure that illustration really applies, though. A hologram is simply a direct reflection of the actions someone else is taking somewhere. It isn't an independent entity, processing decisions that might be the same as someone else's. You might as well point at a portrait on the wall and ask "is this human?"
Hm? Perhaps, perhaps not. Maybe the other way around, and we're beyond human. What do you think?
[He smirks at 45, before letting out a low chuckle.]
Are you calling me the shadow in Plato's Cave? [And another laugh.] Ah, but not to make it about me. In a way, that's true. A reflection is not its own living breathing human. But if it was given autonomy, in a way that, let's say, it contains part of the psyche of the original, and can act on its own...well. Still not quite human, right? It's only a facsimile of one.
Hahaha, its really funny! Except its not. It just puts all of the onus of their actions on the people around them instead, like "we were doing this all for you guys, sorry!" Murder is murder! That's all there is to it.
[He barks out a laugh at her next statement.]
Hahahaha, what? Really? Why? Were they that scared of you?
I don't know, I can only assume so. They had to send Akira first and gently ask me if I'd be willing to help bring everyone back instead of contacting me themselves.
[ does she look like she has that little self control. ]
I'm pretty sure Taako still half-thinks I'm going to shoot him at some point. Funny, considering they were the ones with access to actual guns.
Well, only you know the script? I certainly don't. You keep talking about playing the role that society has forced on you like this is a continuation of the same stage, but, well.
[Sorry, that is going to just get him to laugh more. He can see them just trembling in fear as they approach her, like she would just up and shoot them in the head.]
That's kind of a strange reputation to have. Its not like you were the one killing people multiple times over the last several weeks, hahaha. [Hoo boy. He winks at her.] Well, good to know I know such a terrifying, chaotic force like you!
Well, maybe its similar scripts? But I suppose my experience only might have passing resemblance to yours.
[He smirks.]
I may not be used to this kind of society, that's right, but...being on strange stages is part and parcel of my job. Though I suppose the people on those stages are nothing more than set dressing. So even conversations like this...well, only brilliant detectives can have things like that, as far as I know.
How can we be beyond human if we play by their rules and follow their laws?
[ a mild, handwavy gesture. ]
It's a copy, existing divergent from its template and original self. What an interesting notion. I thought humans would be too afraid of artificial life like that gaining awareness of itself and any form of independence to truly toy with the idea overmuch.
People on strange stages as set dressing? My, and just what sort of simulations is it that you get put through, Herr Anaido? Don't tell me you're the only self-aware entity in these things.
Do you think all of the rest of us here might actually be set dressing once more? Ah, but I suppose if that were the case, we wouldn't know, would we?
In the way that while an audience member is stuck in the seats of the theater, and is an integral part of it, they may see things the characters on the stage are not aware of. Perhaps? Perhaps...
[A light shrug.]
That's why there's failsafes, usually. But if something is broken, if there's a glitch, if there's something missing...sometimes, it gets overlooked, you know? To err is human, after all.
If I told people, they wouldn't believe me, so I don't! And indeed, I'm a little too aware of myself. Even more than I rightfully should.
[His tone is as light as ever.]
I used to think so at first, on the island, but it seems unlikely. But how would I know? Perhaps you're also your own copies, and the real you is somewhere else entirely. One can only assume.
