[ Where is 45 this fine morning? Is there even more confetti all over? Have people been getting pelted with candy hearts again? Who knows, because she's not actually getting involved in all that today!
Instead, she, perhaps surprisingly, can be found in the kitchen, a couple of books clearly acquired from the library on one of the countertops near where she's set up shop, prepping...
Well, it's probably hard to tell from a distance? At least it doesn't smell like Phoenix's horrifyingly burnt grilled cheese. ]
[ Is that what Phoenix was trying to make??? Food is served three times a day and yet people insist on doing this, why
Even if he can't see what's going on, even one book propped open on the counter is enough of a hint that 45 is somebody learning how to cook, and that's enough for Ayabe to warrant poking his head in. ]
What are you making? You'll want to keep the book away so the pages don't get dirty...
[ I'm going to pretend all my Sunday PCs are in the early morning where everything is fine and nothing's on fire and then all of the sudden all the destruction happens all at once. ]
Being careful is better than what most people can say. Is this your first time cooking? Do you know how to use the oven?
[ Is it on? preheated to the proper baking temperature? he's nosy and goes to check, so 1) the cake doesn't burn, and 2) the kitchen doesn't burn. ]
[ Later in the day after he's exhausted himself crying about all this and losing his mind about somebody being DEAD, he goes on the search for 45, calling her name as he walks quickly down the halls because he can't remember what sense she lost, but between seeing him and hearing him he should have her bases covered. ]
[ It's currently heating, and on its way to a nice and cozy 350 degrees F because unlike some people, she's not in the business of burning things down. ]
[ No hands on experience is usually a recipe for disaster, but at least she does have a recipe book out and that's a lot more than what most novice cooks would allow themselves. ]
It's good that you're learning, though, and cooking is ...supposed to be pretty fail proof as long as you follow the recipe.
[ He finds her in the study, methodically jotting down notes with some of the supplies available in there. About what isn't immediately apparent, but it's a moment or two before she sets the pen down and blinks over at him. ]
People who think they can eyeball measurements, make substitutions as they please, and that time and temperature are interchangeable.
[ That's how things BURN you can't just flash fry something at 1000F for two minutes and expect it to come out like a slow roast.
He sits back and leans against the counter, watching with his arms crossed so he's not tempted to jump in and help. It looks like she's got whisking down pat. Most people would stir and that's not going to trap air. ]
half blind. By which I mean the scarred eye is nonfunctional and clarity of vision comes and goes in the other one, so we're doing great!
She just gestures for him to lower his volume, because pressing down in the air repeatedly with a hand is a universal gesture, right? She'll tilt her head, then say, deliberately and slowly so that he can watch her mouth: ]
[ It's the universal gesture for... something. "Calm down" is what he takes it as, which is more or less the same thing. He can't hear her at all and can't read lips either, so rather than answering her question as it is, he taps his ear and shakes his head instead.
This is sort of what he's been doing all week, asking his yes-no questions out loud and watching the other person nod or shake their head, and them having to write to him to hold their end of the conversation. It's very trying on both their patience, and completely falls apart during trials where everybody's screaming and he has no idea what's going on whoops ]
[ i didn't actually have a specific recipe in mind when i started this thread so i'm just going to roll with it being a standard butter cake now, definitely not for the sake of bribing Mammon.
but it honestly looks like she's got most of the prepwork done already, given the various ingredients scattered around. all that's really left is to mix in the last few dry ingredients, then get it all into a pan. ]
As for the first two... that does depend on the person, doesn't it? Maybe they've been at it long enough to have the experience to know what they can and can't get away with.
That's only if you're talking about experienced cooks. [ Which 45 admits to not being so hopefully he spots measuring cups and everything hanging around the counter or sink and that cake isn't going to poof up five times its size in the oven. ]
Meals are provided here, though, so why are you cooking?
[ Well, at least they're in the study, so she's Prepared. There's a brief sigh as she sorts and shuffles her papers, then scrawls across the top of a blank one: ]
True, true. Anyway, call it a personal interest. A hobby, you know?
[ No, he won't find anything like that on the counter- no, I'm kidding. There's measuring cups, they're just soaking in the sink. Or holding the stuff she's going to be adding in right about... now, apparently, since this is looking nice and peaky and fluffy so far.
[ He nods at the question and goes ahead and continues speaking so he can save trees. ]
I see. I wanted to ask because when we first met, you were able to tell me all that information about building material and its effect on wifi. You said you had a good memory. Is it photographic?
[ Something useful he wanted to know for trials but. it doesn't matter anymore. ]
[ It's a hobby but she's a novice cook. Everybody has to start somewhere, though, and at least she cooks for enjoyment which is more than what he can say. ]
If you have the spare time and money, I guess. I don't bake so much as cook, but if there's any questions you have that can't be answered in a book, I could help.
When something terrible happens, people panic and aren't seeing everything that's there. They focus on one thing and miss details. It would be nice if you could retain the details, but I also feel bad about asking you to be there.
[ If he had a camera- Stefano continues to be right all the time even when he's not here- Ayabe would have used that to take pictures. The closest thing to that that they have is 45 though. ]
[ She likes reading up on it but doesn't get the chance to put any of it into action often? Listen. ]
Well, there is a reason I haven't ever really gotten around to doing anything like this before.
[ Speaking of. ]
How deep of a pan would you say something like this recipe needs? I'm not sure that this recipe actually states how much the mixture should be expected to rise.
