Okay, so - bear with me. [ she waves the paper a bit. ] You're not gonna be able to see it because I've already asked about it. Nobody but me can see it. But I got a note telling me your team and the fact that you've got a role.

Beyond what I'm not allowed to speak about, what I can do is limited to begin with. There are consequences, sometimes. [ and that's all she'll say about that, for now. ] But yes, you are correct: I was informed that I cannot tell others about my assignment.

I don't exactly know how that interacts with the other parties in play, considering you were told, very plainly it seems, without any involvement from myself... perhaps I should ask, for future reference.

I can't, but I know that when we were doing notes in the house we were careful to obscure the handwriting, so that probably wouldn't help even if I did.

[ sigh. ] I guess it doesn't really matter right now. If it's a role like the professors, they need to stay secret. I don't want anybody targeting them.

It makes sense. Trying to figure out a way of making the effects of your actions more overt, but keeping your identity secret usually involves something like that... Though I suppose that must mean I've gotten their attention already.

[ she tsks a little, but whatever other comment she might have to add dies before she can voice it because, well.

it's strange, though. going into the memory, there's a faint, persisting feeling of disorientation, of things feeling jarringly not-right. a thin current of real and physical pain threading through the background that ... has no basis in what's being seen, right?

and reality crashes back in. right, the explosion. you can't feel your arm past the stump remaining. there's something wrong with your eye, and one of your legs, your system diagnostics are blaring errors and critical failures at you, and your team is yelling at you, for you...

[ sigh. ] I don't know. It was mostly just a nightmare. We found a scrapbook of us at the end, and a diary talking about shit that's happened here.

It mostly just made me trust them. Black Shadows, I mean. They're trying to help.

These days it's mercenary work, generally, at my discretion. Escort, retrieval, rescue, infiltration.

It's work enough for a handful of dolls who shouldn't exist.

... Yeah, I imagine they are. All signs point to them being as limited as us here, though, if not even moreso in certain ways.

That said, their counsel has remained the same for our entire time here that I know of. If this is a case of them being able to slowly say more as time goes on, I wonder if they don't quite know how to get around all the blocks yet, or if they simply can't say.

Okay, sure, but that doesn't explain anything, 45. People don't make shit to throw it away, like there had to have been some purpose. Were you just an experiment to see if they could, or what.

We were made to do one specific thing, whether or not we realized it beforehand. We did that specific thing. A mission went wrong. Everyone on site, whether they were involved or not, either died when that happened, or were killed while trying to get out by the cleanup they had in place.

Whoever it was who made us, they wanted that specific outcome, and they wanted no one else to realize what had happened. No loose ends, neat and clean; no one to know of what they'd done. My sister and I were subjected to a self destruct command during all that to erase any possible evidence that might have pointed back to them.

[ she was definitely built to be disposable. ]

They just didn't account for me surviving.
