[ hello minako, are you hunting down your roomba today. because it seems not long after everything happens, she hasn't quite gotten cleaned off and changed out of their, uh, very messy everything just yet. the shuttershades and used up glow sticks are even still clinging to her scarf.
where are they, i don't know. wherever minako can hobble to. ]
Killing the ones with my face wasn't that hard. We just happen to share the same model specifications, though it seems they were even more defective than I am. And 9 has a terrible habit of trusting me unconditionally, so considering that trait made it through to these copies, it wasn't all that much effort to deal with her in the end.
[ ... ]
It's funny, though- she wasn't conventionally made. She shouldn't have been there at all.
The techs who worked on me complained endlessly about my limited storage space and memory. I'm not technically supposed to be a combat model- I came from a multi-purpose line that was then loaded up with electronic warfare, network protocols, and signal analoging software that left me with too little space left to install any actual combat programming.
[ she's 9s, except instead of owning the fact that they wanted a hackerbot, they then complained she wasn't as good at Fight as the actual fightbots. ]
It's an unorthodox configuration considering that we don't exactly have much left in the way of widespread networks, and when I was ostensibly created for the sake of combat the fact that my performance lagged behind dolls properly specced into it made me useless.
[ she
seemed to do all right for herself in the break in? ]
You're not useless! If you hadn't been there, Tonbokiri-san and I would've been totally screwed!
[ she'd almost suggest maybe switching out parts to make her more combat oriented but
that somehow seems insensitive. ]
Besides, everyone's good at different things. Just because you're good at different things than what those stupid technicians thought you should be isn't a bad thing!
Compared to other dolls, I am. No one wanted a T-Doll who had to learn how to perform her basic functions like a human, who barely has enough memory to even just run her normal processing.
[ mildly: ]
Ah, but it's not like build quality would have been on their minds, considering I was made to be disposable.
[ so the fact that she survived when so many others didn't is a bit of cosmic irony. a terrible joke, is what it is. ]
... Not quite. I was very specifically built to be disposable, so they could trigger a self-destruct command and erase any evidence of wrongdoing after. I was only meant to last as long as it took to do what I was intended to.
If things had gone to plan, I would have died there in that factory with every other doll and human that day, and whoever was responsible would have been able to sweep it neatly under the rug.
[ ... ]
9 wasn't involved. She came after. A good while after.
The only one who can remember it, anyway. There was one other, since she was the cleanup they'd put in place for anyone who managed to make it outside ... but she doesn't seem to recall it. I suspect she was reformatted.
[ said matter of factly, like wiping dolls' memories and starting fresh from factory settings is just a normal fact of life.
9 wasn't made as a Tactical Doll. She was a civilian doll who went and paid an underground technician for a refit after running into me a couple of times.
[ so, she wouldn't be on that assembly line. not as 'ump9', anyway. ]
I don't want to know how much that cost, let alone the effort she put into specifically trying to match me, but it wasn't her money in the end.
... Admiration is certainly a word for the kind of pedestal she's put me on.
[ hm. ]
Long story short, I freed her and 17 other dolls who'd had a trojan installed and were tasked with carrying out a crime ring's dirty work under threat of a self-destruct order. In doing so, I apparently picked up a stray.
[ there is at least one parallel here that might be the obvious reason why she took action. ]
Bother? I wouldn't say that. I'd say she probably could do with a few more reminders of the fact that she did, in fact, promise me that she'll never be like me though.
[ it's chiding, exasperated.
... it's an older sister talking about a younger one, who knows there are things she can't control, but still thinks the younger is being stupid anyway. ]
Anyway, discarded probably isn't the right word for her either, considering the gang wasn't very happy to lose the Dolls they had in their employ.
She thinks it for the wrong reasons. She looks up to me because she thinks I'm strong, but I wouldn't wish the kind of 'strong' I am on anyone. On the contrary, in fact.
Besides, proper employ or not, the fact remains that they would rather not have lost them. Not exactly the kind of situation I'd apply the word discarded to.
I'm not sure what part of 'self-destruct order' wasn't clear, but more or less yes. [ ... ] It wouldn't have been too difficult for them to enforce compliance anyway. Dolls were made to follow orders.
