Absolutely. But you have to figure out if you're missing pieces when you try to solve it, and if there's missing pieces, which ones those are.
[There's a little turtle that waves a little flag...and the race starts. Anaido lets his fox go for a side road after a moment - seemingly there are more power-ups there.]
[ she doesn't know these maps yet, so it looks like the first lap will just be getting a handle on what the course is like. detour for an early item works better when you know how best to make use of it, after all, so... a decent plan, but not in her situation. ]
A puzzle that can be assembled into the wrong shape if you don't realize you're missing pieces? What a fascinating thing indeed. Then the only way to tell is to know what the original intended shape was in the first place, isn't it?
True, but sometimes it's an older puzzle, and you don't have the lid on top of it that tells you what the picture is supposed to be. It's really unfortunate. You're just flying blind.
[On his screen, it seems that the route is leading his character into a forest - there are a lot more obstacles, here.]
Oooh. What if you put it all together and don't realize you're missing pieces at all? And then someone, years down the line, hands you a few of them. What then?
[ have fun with your forest route, the one in the plains outside is... just about that, simple and fairly straightforward, if a little lengthier than trying to cut through the woods.
[His fox gets what seems to be a pretty powerful power-up - some kind of little rainbow with a smiley face that gives invincibility - but doesn't activate it, and sure enough, in a turn, his little fox hits a tree. Anaido only smiles as he reverses, the fox shaking its paw.]
That would just mean that the puzzle was much bigger and more complicated than you ever thought it was.
[ cat nabs something that looks like it could be tumbleweeds or hairballs. she tosses them out experimentally- looks like they're meant to serve as a distraction or to block the screen or something when they hit another kart, but for the npc computers, seems to make them swerve around drunkenly for a bit? sure.
oh, but there looks like there's a ramp of some sort to shortcut a bit if someone had a speed boost... for another time, then. ]
Do you break apart and remake the puzzle in that case, not knowing if you have all the pieces or you'll ever complete it? Or settle for thinking 'oh, well, this works fine, I'm happy where I'm at?'
I think that depends if you like the picture of the puzzle you completed. If you really want to go through the effort of knowing what it really looks like, even if you may never know the whole picture, you can take it apart and try to put it together again. Nobody is stopping you.
[The fox progresses through the forest, trees falling around it, before it gets back to the main road. One of the NPCs throws some kind of sticky substance at Anaido's fox, who swerves away from it, but this allows some of the others to pass it.]
But if you're happy with it as it is, you can leave it like that too. Uncompleted. Sometimes puzzles are just like that.
[ The cat has been very middling of the pack this entire time, neither lagging behind nor really standing out in front. One of the NPCs goes barreling by, pulled by some sort of stampeding animal, but outside of kicking up some of the vegetation does little to really daunt the cat as it speeds merrily along. ]
[One wonders why he hasn't used his invincibility spell as his fox swerves off the road from the blast of another racer's bomb - the turtle has to dive into the water to throw his fox back onto the road.]
Hahaha. I think I'm just an incomplete puzzle for now. It depends on what other people want to do with me, I think.
[New lap. He's not going the way he did before, off the beaten path. Now he's with the rest of the NPC racers, swerving around them with a good amount of skill to gain some places.]
Underestimated me? [Ah, of course. He almost expected to hear that from someone, at some point.] Hahaha, perhaps. I do things that will help us all, in the end. Burn down the forest to save the trees, perhaps? That's probably not the right saying.
It's certainly not a saying that I'm familiar with, but who can say? You're a lot more deliberate than you let on, aren't you?
[ If they weren't both focused on the screen to some extent right now she'd just be beaming cheerfully up at him. That said, she still does giggle a little, softly. ]
See, we've learned something about you already. For example, you don't balk at overly played out metaphors. That says a lot about a person, don't you think?
I'm a brilliant detective. If I wasn't deliberate, I wouldn't be a good one! Haha!
[But he isn't a good one, he knows that. At least, not a good one the way people think brilliant detectives are.]
Sometimes, metaphors mean more than people think they do. [He actually turns to her, grinning.] And I think you're right. Memories are one thing, but actions and words decide a person's character, right?
